I have not yet decided on which genre I want to focus on for my music
video. I am very interested in doing a video to a song by The 1975, the genre
for this band is Indie Rock. I also could do a song from the Pop Genre, or
maybe even R&B.
R&B
- Background of the genre
R&B stands for Rhythm and Blues, it is a genre that is popular in
the African American culture which originated in the 1940's. Lyrics focus on
successes and failures in relationships, freedom, economics, aspirations, and
sex. The genre has gone through many changes over the years, until mid-1950s
the genre was mainly just blues music, but as rock and roll became more popular
R&B transitioned into electric blues. Now in the 21st century R&B
incorporates many different genres such as soul, funk, hip hop and dance.
- Key players in the genre
- Michael Jackson
- R. Kelly
- Mariah Carey
- Beyoncé
- Chris Brown
- Drake
- Rhianna
- The weeknd
- Nicki Minaj
- Conventions of the music
R&B songs normally revolve around Relationships, sex, love and
Partying. Though there are exceptions to this rule such as songs like
'formation' by Beyoncé, these songs are more political and are designed to
prove a point, show respect and support for the cause.
R&B songs can be fast paced and slow paced; it depends on the
content of the song. Songs that are more romantic are normally slow paced and
there isn't much of a beat behind them. Songs that are about Sex and Partying
often have a very heavy beat behind them.
- Conventions of videos
Videos that focus around Love in this genre generally have slow and
romantic videos
Videos for R&B show off wealth and luxurious items
Fast paced often have women in a lack of
clothing throwing themselves over the men in the video.
There is normally no storyline to a fast
paced video whereas videos that are slow paced have a story behind them of some
sort of tragedy then the resolution at the end.
Pop
- Background of the genre
Pop music originated from the 1950's and the 1960's, in the western
world. Pop has been developed from rock and roll. 'Pop Music' is just a
shortened version of 'popular music,' because of this Pop has been able to incorporate
many other genres into the songs that fall in this category.
- Key players in the genre
- Justin Bieber, though his newer songs can fit in the R&B Genre.
- Ariana Grande
- Little Mix
- One Direction
- The Beach Boys
- Duran Duran
- Miley Cyrus
- Britney Spears
- Katy Perry
- Taylor Swift
- Conventions of the music
Pop music is usually catchy
It is often about relationships and Love
Can be about sex, though not as upfront as R&B, normally portrayed
though euphemisms.
- Conventions of videos
Normally bright and colourful
Eye-catching
Normally follows some sort of storyline
Over-exaggerated acting
Indie Rock
Indie Rock
- Background of the genre
- Key players in the genre
- The 1975
- Arctic Monkeys
- Alt-J
- Bastille
- James Bay
- Lana Del Rey
- Catfish and the Bottlemen
- Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros
- Conventions of the music
Indie Rock music usually full of emotion and passion, this is best shown through the lyrics. Indie rock artists usually will write their songs themselves as they likely can't afford a songwritter, this makes the songs more raw than pop songs or R&B songs. The lyrics normally have more meaning. The music is usually from a band, it will be sound from a guitar, bass and drums, as opposed to the artifical sounds used in dance and house music.
- Conventions of videos
Lighting is used in indie rock music videos to enhance the mood and meaning of the song, if a song has quite dark lyrics, the video will have low key lighting. Videos often have some sort of filter over the top to make the music video look a interesting colour. They usually include a section of the artist performing their song, as the music video is all about promoting the artist.
