Analysis of Music Video - Shawn Mendes, Stitches

The video starts with a expensive looking car, driving into a car park, possibly some product placement. This could suggest already that the person in this video is very rich. When Shawn Mendes gets out the car he is wearing a black leather jacket most likely trying to make him appear 'cool' and tough.


The next sequence of the video shows Shawn Mendes attempting to get across the car park. This part of the video is very interesting as it explores an usual path of a music video. As he is walking he appears to be being beaten up and as the video goes on he gets dirtier and more blood and bruises appear on him. The interesting

part is that their is never anyone but him in the frame so no one is actually beating him up. The beating up is a metaphor to go along with the lyrics as he is talking about how without someones love he going to need stitches. A lot of this video is filmed in long shots to emphasise the hits and too see him fall.

At the end of the video, Shawn Mendes is seen washing his face in a sink, when he looks back in the mirror, his face is clean, further emphasising the metaphor, in which he is not actually being beaten up but that he is in a lot of pain from a break up that he feels as though hes being beaten up.
