Analysis of Music Video - Selena Gomez, Hands to Myself
The video starts with shot of Selena Gomez lying down, but the cuts straight to a tilt of some maps, one with a circle and a love heart around a certain destination. It then shows a series of clips of magazine cuttings of a man plastered over walls, this is showing a clear obsession with a person in the first 20 seconds of the music video. She then breaks into his house, and takes the trench coat off that she was wearing leaving her only in her underwear. This video has a very sexualised view of women.
Selena Gomez then goes into the mans walk in wardrobe and steals a shirt, she then proceed to put it on and dance in front of a mirror. This is supposed to appear sexy.
The next section of the video is very sexualised, in her fantasy she is imagining him in bed with her. The shots in this scene are very fast paced switching from the two characters together to Selena Gomez on her own. The shots of just her on her own are taken in the same angles and closeups as when the two are together, but instead of his hands on her body it is her own hands pretending that is him touching her. This fits with the lyrics as the song is about how she can't keep her hands to herself. The video continues on showing Selena Gomez around the man's house, he comes home and discovers that she is there. Unlike in her fantasies, the man calls the police and she gets arrested.
The video ends with the video zooming out slightly, so we can see that the video we just watched was on a TV screen. The shot then cuts to Selena Gomez and the man in the video cuddled up on the sofa, this is an unusual way to finish a music video but is also quite interesting.
