Secondary Research

Videos by popular mainstream artists such as one direction and Justin Bieber get the most views on youtube. Currently the video that is holding the most views in the first 24 hour period of the video being released, by Vevo, is Adele, 'Hello'. She achieved 27.7 million views in the first 24 hours, this is a staggering number of views and is very impressive. Other past winners have been Taylor Swift with 'Bad Blood', Nicki Minaj with 'Anaconda' and 'Stupid Hoe', Miley Cyrus with 'Wrecking Ball' and 'We Can't Stop', One Direction with 'Best Song Ever' and 'Live While We're Young', Justin Bieber with 'Beauty and a Beat' and 'Boyfriend' and finally Rihanna with 'Where Have You Been'.

The Artists with the most Vevo Certified, 100 million Views are Rihanna with 25 videos, Justin Bieber with 23, Eminem and Taylor Swift with 21, Beyonce and One Direction with 16, Enrique Iglesias and Katy Perry with 15, Maroon 5, Nicki Minaj, Shakira and Selena Gomez with 14, Chris Brown and Pitbull with 13, Lady Gaga with 12, Ariana Grande and Britney Spears with 11 and finally Avicii, Avril Lavigne, The Black Eyes Peas, Demi Lovato and Michael Jackson with 10. These are very impressive and really shows you who the most popular artists are.

The fastest Vevo Certified videos are Adele 'Hello' in which it took 5 days, Miley Cyrus 'Wrecking ball' in 6 days, Shakira Feat. Rihanna 'Cant Remember to Forget You' in 10 days, Nicki Minaj 'Anaconda' and Taylor Swift 'Bad Blood' in 11 Days, Calvin Harris Feat Rihanna 'This is What You Came For' in 15 days, Taylor Swift 'Black Space' in 16 days and Rhianna Feat. Drake in 17 Days.

Looking at the Vevo records really helps to show how popular some artists are and shows us the music that the majority of people are listening too.

When looking at more indie artists such as The Lumineers and The 1975, they often don't receive half as many views on their songs, and on the rare occasion that they do it has taken them much longer that 17 days to achieve that amount of views. The 1975's most recent video 'Somebody Else' has been out for 15 days and only has 4 million views, comparing this to Adele's 'Hello' which had 22.7 million in just 24 hours, we can really see that Pop has the mass audience.

Audience Research Responces

I asked 20 people my questionnaire with an age range of 15-52, from the range of people I asked it was more likely that the younger generation were the ones who watched music videos more often. I tried to get an even number of male and female participants in my questionnaire, though it was slightly more female heavy as I know more girls than I do boys. I found that the split for who watches more music videos between girls and boys is split pretty evenly. From all the participants I asked 19 of them watch music videos, though only 15 of them watch music videos often.  When I asked what they usually watch music videos on I found that most people watch them on YouTube and some people watch them on music channels such as 4music. I got an array of answers when I questioned people on the last music video they watched. I had responses from all different genres. Some examples are The 1975 ‘Somebody Else’, The Lumineers ‘Cleopatra’, 5 Seconds of Summer ‘Girls Talk Boys’ and Jake Bugg ‘Love, Hope and Misery’. Pop and R&B seem to be very popular genres at the moment, as they were the most mentioned genres however I did get a few responses stating that Indie Rock was their favourite genre, which surprised me. Indie Rock would be quite interesting video to make, it’s an idea I didn’t really think about until this questionnaire. This questionnaire has really helped me to find what is popular and to get a basic idea on the target audience.

Questionnaire for my Audience Research

At this stage in my research and planning, I have yet to decide what track I want to use in my video. These simple 7 questions will help me to find my target audience and also help me to determine what kind of music the majority of people like, and then i can make something that will appeal to a mass audience.

1. Age?
2. Gender?
3. Do you watch music videos?
4. If so, how often?
7. How do you usually watch music videos?
5. What was the last music video you watched?
6. What genre of music do you normally listen to?

Analysis of Music Video - Troye Sivan, Fools

This music video is the second of a series of three. The begining of this video shows Troye Sivans character and his boyfriend, sat together in his boyfriends room, this is different from most music videos as this one includes a homosexual couple, whereas most typical music videos include a heterosextual couple. The font used to introduce the video is a very bold white sans-serif, which could refelct the more modern feel behind this video.

As the video contiues we see many intresting shots of the parelles of what occurs in that boys bedroom. There are many shots of Troye Sivan and his boyfriend kissing in bed, and then many other shots of his dad beating up the boyfriend. This is a very intresting topic that is incorperated into this music video, as this is a struggle that many gay people have to stuggle with.

The music stops for a brief pause so you can hear the boyfriends dad shouting at him that if Troye Sivan ever goes back to their house he would kill him.The shots that follow on from this show the boy being beaten up now has had to find a girlfriend, a close up of Troye Sivans face shows how heart broken he feels.

This sequence also cuts between parallel shots again, it shows shots of Troye Sivan and his boyfriend looking really happy, playing around and seemingly having fun, and then cuts to shots with his boyfriend with his new girlfriend and he doesnt look as happy, his smiles seem forced.

The video ends with an advertisment for his next video 'Talk Me Down' this section also includes product placement for a new laptop at the time.

Analysis of Music Video - Selena Gomez, Hands to Myself

The video starts with shot of Selena Gomez lying down, but the cuts straight to a tilt of some maps, one with a circle and a love heart around a certain destination. It then shows a series of clips of magazine cuttings of a man plastered over walls, this is showing a clear obsession with a person in the first 20 seconds of the music video. She then breaks into his house, and takes the trench coat off that she was wearing leaving her only in her underwear. This video has a very sexualised view of women.

Selena Gomez then goes into the mans walk in wardrobe and steals a shirt, she then proceed to put it on and dance in front of a mirror. This is supposed to appear sexy.

The next section of the video is very sexualised, in her fantasy she is imagining him in bed with her. The shots in this scene are very fast paced switching from the two characters together to Selena Gomez on her own. The shots of just her on her own are taken in the same angles and closeups as when the two are together, but instead of his hands on her body it is her own hands pretending that is him touching her. This fits with the lyrics as the song is about how she can't keep her hands to herself. The video continues on showing Selena Gomez around the man's house, he comes home and discovers that she is there. Unlike in her fantasies, the man calls the police and she gets arrested.

The video ends with the video zooming out slightly, so we can see that the video we just watched was on a TV screen. The shot then cuts to Selena Gomez and the man in the video cuddled up on the sofa, this is an unusual way to finish a music video but is also quite interesting.

Analysis of Music Video - Shawn Mendes, Stitches

The video starts with a expensive looking car, driving into a car park, possibly some product placement. This could suggest already that the person in this video is very rich. When Shawn Mendes gets out the car he is wearing a black leather jacket most likely trying to make him appear 'cool' and tough.

The next sequence of the video shows Shawn Mendes attempting to get across the car park. This part of the video is very interesting as it explores an usual path of a music video. As he is walking he appears to be being beaten up and as the video goes on he gets dirtier and more blood and bruises appear on him. The interesting

part is that their is never anyone but him in the frame so no one is actually beating him up. The beating up is a metaphor to go along with the lyrics as he is talking about how without someones love he going to need stitches. A lot of this video is filmed in long shots to emphasise the hits and too see him fall.

At the end of the video, Shawn Mendes is seen washing his face in a sink, when he looks back in the mirror, his face is clean, further emphasising the metaphor, in which he is not actually being beaten up but that he is in a lot of pain from a break up that he feels as though hes being beaten up.

Analysis of Digipaks - Rihanna, Talk That Talk

This digipak has 6 panels, and 2 inserts. These inserts will have images in, information about the album and may have lyrics to the songs in. The font cover has Rihanna as the focal point, she is in the center and is the biggest thing on the cover. The album title is written in a serif font, making it appear classic. Rihanna's logo of the 'R' is very sharp, this could suggest that she is dangerous, the fact that smoke is coming out of mouth also could suggest danger. The images on the panels are all quite dark, this could imply that the album has dark themes. The back cover has another image of Rihanna, this one is flipped upside down, she is smoking a cigarette which again adds to her danger. The back cover includes a bar-code and a track-list. The track-list on this album runs along the edge rather than at the bottom, the font is red, almost telling the audience to read at their own risk. The CD design looks like a news paper article, this with her name and the album title as the headline, this is an interesting way to present the CD as it makes it look like she in serious news.

Analysis of Digipaks - Lana Del Rey, Ultraviolence

Lana Del Rey's Ultraviolence Digipak only has 4 panels, the cd is not placed on one of these panels insead it is placed between an inside panel and the backcover, this is different to other digipaks I have analysed. The cd has an intresting design, it is covered in multicoloured flowers on, they are a vibrant blue, gold and red. This makes it appear more expensive as they look luxurious. The front cover is very simple, it is just a image of her stood next to a vintage car. The title is in very big and bold white font, it is spread over the whole width of the bottom of the album cover. The cover is black and white causing it to appear classic and elegant. The inside panels are just an image of the new york skyline spread over the two pages, its very simple, it doesnt really give anything away about the album.

The back cover has bold white sans-serif font for its tracklisting, it tooks very modern and it covers both sides of the back cover. Showing that the album is more important than the artist. The small print at the bottom of the back cover, has information about copyright, the album producers and other information.

When looking at the images compared to the album title and even some of the track list, it shows a real juxtaposition. The images of her are soft, and while she doesn't have a smile on her face she doesn't appear sad, like some of the track list songs would such as 'pretty when you cry' and 'sad girl'. She also does not look the slightest bit agressive like the album title 'Ultraviolence' would suggest.

Analysis of Digipaks - Lady Gaga, The Fame Monster

Lady Gaga's digipak has 6 Panels, and a small insert most likely full of images and information on each track in the album, occasuionally artists use these inserts to write down the lyrics of their songs so that listeners can sing along. The digipak design is very dark, this could be suggesting that the songs on the album are dark and hard hitting. The CD's are made very simply. Big Sans-serif font in revserse block. There are 2 CD's as this is the deluxe album, it includes 24 songs as listed on the back of the album. Thats adding an extra 12 songs than the normal version. The front cover is quite simple, it is just a image of her on a dark grey background, however in this image has Lady Gaga shown with messy long black hair and mascara running down her face suggesting that she in in pain, adding to the dark feel of the album. The font used is sans-serif, making it appear quite modern, the font is in gold, suggestinging that the album is luxurious, perhaps because this is the deluxe edition. The image on the back cover is exactly the same as the image on the front cover, in the same positon. The back covere has, as expected, a barcode, it then has the tracklisting, these are written in a white sans-serif font simpilar to the CD design, except not as bold. The back cover will also have information on the record label and copyright information on it. The positioning of the text on this back cover is interesting as it runs up the side rather than along the bottom, making the image of her the focal point, suggesting that she is more important than the tracks on the album.

Analysis of Music Video - Beyoncé, Sorry

The video begins with a minute long section of BeyoncĂ© talking, the first line she says is "so what are you gonna say at my funeral now that you've killed me?" This is a very powerful first line to have on a music video it is stating that she is in pain, and that someone has wronged her. This small section of the video is from the Lemonade Film in which music video has a small interlude that tells a story throughout, they link with their title if that section, such as 'Apathy' for this video and 'Anger' for Don't Hurt Yourself.

Serena Williams is featured in this video due to it being about strong black females. The location of filming seems to be somewhere very extravagant, most likely and old house in Louisiana. Serena is descending the stairs at this point in an extreme long shot, she is dressed all in black against a white background making her stand out and caused the audience to focus on her. At this point the song has only just started and is in its intro, it is setting the scene rather than telling a story.

This is the first time Beyonce appears in the video, she is simply just sat in a chair with a lot of attitude. The video is very simple itself, this shot especially, it is simply just a luxurious black chair against a white wall. The video is also in black and white making it seem slightly more artistic.

The video then changes location, it instead is on a old style bus. All the dancers are in sync, but not perfectly, some of the dancers start to late or to early and are not exactly the same as the person next to them, this may represent the idea that everyone is unique and not one thing is the same. The video is very angry, it contains lots of swearing and has a line that specifically says "Middle fingers up", this video however is empowering as the whole meaning behind it is that she is not sorry for what her husband has done and she is not taking the blame.

The last section there are two new locations one outside and one indoors on a set. They both have a choreographed dance that beyonce is dancing too. The editing of this section is very interesting as they have filmed it in a way that allows them to cut shots so the movements are very jumpy, but the lyrics shes singing still flow well.

Analysis of Music Video - The 1975, Somebody Else

The video starts with a three minute clip of Matty Healy entering his room and getting ready, while this sounds very simple it is quite obscure. He enters the room wearing the same costume as he is wearing in the 'A Change of Heart' video, he proceeds to take off that costume, rub the clown makeup off his face and then get ready for the new video. The sequence is filmed as a continuous shot, from a fixed long shot, the placement of the camera allows you to see the whole room. The sequence is in black and white, with the lighting quite dim, causing the room to look undone, the walls are not painted and the whole room looks messy and not put together. Throughout this sequence there is no talking, there is ambient sound to make it seem a bit more realistic. At random intervals an applause track is played, or a laugh track, once he sits on the sofa a track of a deep mumbling is heard, its almost robotic, they are often cut short and abruptly. This is unusual for music videos as this is trying to make your audience on edge. There is a second character in the video who doesn't move an inch throughout the whole thing, this short sequence of the video really makes the audience question what is going on.

The video then cuts to this establishing shot of London, the music starts and and the video appears normal as it is in colour. The simple sans-serif font used in white really makes it easy to read and causes the writing to stand out against the dark background. This shot is almost and introductory shot, showing the audience exactly who's video this is.

The First shot we see of the actual music video is Matty Healy from a side profile, it lingers on him for a few seconds, almost as if they are introducing the character. Low lighting has been used in this shot, to show it is nighttime but also to create and cast shadows, which helps to create mystery around his character.

The next shot is introducing the song title, the font again is simple white sans-serif. It tells the audience which song they are listening to. The shot is also an extreme long shot showing the character walking down the stairs, the lighting is extremely dark, casing shadows on everything. This shot also shows that he is at an apartment block, suggesting this part of the video directly follows on from the first black and white sequence.

The video follows this character adventure through London, upset and constantly drinking. This fits with the lyrics as he is singing about how he can't stand to see someone with someone else. His behaviour in the video is similar to the behaviour of someone who has just broken up with someone and regrets it.

He then gets himself into situations where people are making fun of him due to his embarrassing karaoke. These people then go see him in a back ally and start to beat him up, this small sequence doesn't seem to fit with the rest of the video. This is until the next sequence when we see that the girl in this shot isn't actually a girl it is Matty Healy. The fact that the girl is just standing idly by and watching him get beaten up, and that this girl ends up actually being the character being beaten up could suggest that he is his own worst enemy.

Analysis of Digipaks - Katy Perry, Teenage Dream

Katy Perry's Teenage dream album has 6 panels, it also includes an insert of a small booklet. The front cover is of Katy Perry posed in some pink clouds, she is obviously naked which could be argued that this is sexualisation of women to bring attention to the album. The font cover doesn't have anything else on it, not even the title of the album, that is on the spine of the album, showing that she is the most important thing on the album. The back cover includes a bar code and the track-list, the track-list is split in two, the Red font is the songs on the normal album and the blue font is for the deluxe tracks that you will only get on that album. The small font will be details on the record company and the copyright information. The two CD's used are designed to look like treats, one looks like a peppermint sweet and the other a doughnut, this makes them seem more interesting. The images in side are powerful, she is wearing a crown in one of them showing that she is important.

Theorist - Freud

Sigmund Freud was born on the 6th May 1856, in the Austrian Empire. He died 83 years later in 1939, in London, England. Freud was the founder of psychoanalysis, which lead him to create his theory on voyeurism. A voyeur is someone who gets pleasure from watching, specifically watching sexual acts. This can link to music videos though the sexualisation of women.

Theorist - Laura Mulvey

Laura Mulvey was born on the 15th August 1941. She is a British feminist film theorist; her feminism is what has caused her to create her theory of The Male Gaze. Laura Mulvey works in the film industry, and she focuses on the portrayal of women in films. The Male Gaze is the idea that women in the film industry are objectified and sexualised for the benefit of men. This suggests that women are dressed in little clothing to attract a male audience.

Analysis of Digipaks - Lemonade, Beyonce

Lemonade is BeyoncĂ©’s sixth studio album; it was released on the 23rd April 2016. It was released by BeyoncĂ©’s own record label Parkwood Entertainment, and distributed through Columbia records, a subsidiary of Sony Music Entertainment and the record label BeyoncĂ© is signed to. Lemonade is BeyoncĂ©’s second visual album, it is darker than her previous album, BeyoncĂ©. While BeyoncĂ© is mainly known for her R&B background, this album explores many genres such as pop, blues, rock, hip hop, soul, funk and country. She also has many guest artists James Blake, in 'Forward', Kendrick Lamar, in 'Freedom, The Weeknd, in '6 Inch,' and Jack White, in 'Don't Hurt Yourself'. BeyoncĂ© exclusively released this album on Tidal, the streaming service, owned by BeyoncĂ© and her husband, Jay Z. However, two days later the album was available to purchase on Amazon and iTunes, though has still not been released on any other streaming sites. Lemonade debuted at Number 1 on the US Billboard 200. This album features her song 'Formation' a single she released in responce to police brutality against black people in america, this will have done well to promote the album, though this probaly wasnt her main motive for releasing the song.

The cover to BeyoncĂ©’s album features her in an expensive looking fur coat, the fur coat will help to represent her wealth. BeyoncĂ©’s face is also slightly distorted in the front cover, this will be to bring attention to the title of the album, it will make it stand out more rather than having all the attention on her face, it also shows that she doesn't even have to have her face showing for the album to get noticed, it already obvious its BeyoncĂ©. BeyoncĂ© also has her hair styled in a typical style in black culture, called cornrows. This helps add to the feel of black power portrayed heavily in the album. The back cover of the Digipak is from the same photoshoot, which happens to be on the set of the 'Don't Hurt Yourself' video. This back page shows her face, though it is darkened by a shadow cast across her face, continuing to suggest that her face isn’t important, it’s the content of the album that is important.

The inside of her digipak features another picture of the traditional black cultural hairstyle, the cornrows, again showing her support for the black community and also showing that she a strong black woman. The CD case contains two disks, one is a simple yellow and seemingly see-through disk, and the other is a light yellow. one of these will be the DVD disk for the albums film, and the other will be the CD disk that hold the music. the disks are very simple, there doesn’t appear to be any writing on them, this will help me to decide what sort of CD's I should design when it comes to making my digipack.

Inside of the booklet inside of Beyonces CD case for Lemonade, Beyonce has included photos taken from the music videos in her visual album film.  Each track photo is paired to  a different feeling, for example 'Dont Hurt Yourself' is paired with the Anger and 'Sorry' is paired with Apathy. The pictures are very bold and show her to be a strong woman.

Conventions of a Digipak

Theorist - Saussure

Ferdinand de Saussure was born in 1857, in Geneva Switzerland, he died 55 years later in 1913. Saussure was interested in linguistics, the scientific study of language, specifically language form, language meaning and language in context. His theory was all about semiotics, how meaning is created through various forms of media, Signifiers, what something is, and signified, how the Signifier is used to create meaning.

This theory will be very helpful when studying music videos as it will allow me to see the deeper meaning behind the video. It will also help me with my production as it will help me to try to create a great video with lots of meaning.

Analysis of Magazine Ad - Taylor Swift, Red

Taylor Swift has obviously used red font, to promote her album 'Red'. The font is the main feature of the advert, so it automatically draws the eye. The long shot of her is quite plain, and nothing on her outfit is revealing, so she is the complete opposite to Laura Mulrey's theory of the 'male gaze' as she Taylor Swift is quite covered but is still able to sell millions of records. The background is black and white but it has a slight red hue to it, creating an artistic effect. The advert includes a tagline advertising her song 'we are never getting back together' as saying it is a number 1 multi-platinum selling single, this will cause people to see that she performed that single and see how successful it is, so they will want to go out and buy it. In the bottom right of this advert, there is website information so people can get more information if they want to. At the bottom of the poster spread across the whole width, there is an advertisement about how if you buy the album at Target, an American supermarket, you will get three bonus tracks, this deal with target will be profiting both Target and Taylor Swift herself.

Analysis of Magazine Ad - Nicki Minaj, Pink Friday Roman Reloaded

This Advertisement is more simple than the others I have looked at. The font is Big and Bold so it is eye catching and really stands out to a consumer. Nicki Minaj has placed herself in the centre of the advert, so your eye immediately gets drawn to her. She is wearing lots of vibrant colours such as bright pink and sky blue, this helped to play on her image at that time, of an over the top, wig wearing version of herself. There is little direct address in this advertisement, the two Nicki Minaj's in green are looking straight at the camera but they are the smallest feature on the poster, this could suggest that she doesn't think direct address is important when it comes to advertising. At the bottom, there is information on her record labels and a website URL, this allows people who want more information on her album can visit the website and it will give them details and most likely a link on where to buy it. The font used is sans-serif making the text seem more modern, this works especially well as the album is called 'roman reloaded' showing it is a more modern version of the previous album, 'Pink Friday'.

Analysis of Magazine Ad - Rihanna, Rated R

The 'R' in the upper right corner is Rihanna's symbol she uses on a few of her album covers, the 'R' is very sharp and appears very edgy, playing on Rihanna's image. The image is a close up of her face, it is the focus of the poster, which shows that she is the most important aspect of the album. She is wearing a lot of jewellery in this poster, all of which I very plain and in some cases sharp looking, this makes her appear dangerous but also showcases her wealth. The font she has used is sans-serif, and the reverse block writing stands out a lot, though the album title is not that bold, showing it’s not as important as her but important enough to make it to the cover. Rhianna's poster includes information in the bottom right corner about her website and record label, allowing people to get extra information on Rihanna and her new album if they want to. In this image, Rihanna is wearing black leather, this continues to add to the edgy image she has created for herself. She also has bold eye makeup on, it is quite dark and in parts pointy, this could connote danger. Her lipstick is also very dark further emphasises the danger surrounding this image. In this image, Rihanna is using direct address to get a deeper connection with the audience. Her expression is quite threatening, almost suggesting she is daring people to buy her album.

Analysis of Magazine Ad - Katy Perry, Teenage Dream

The image is very vibrant and colour, this makes it very eye catching. Katy Perry is the center of this image, drawing the attention straight to her. She is using direct address as she is looking directly into the camera, causing the advertisement to be more personal, it's like she is looking right at you asking you to buy her album. This can increase sales of the album as people feel like they have more of a personal connection. This can link to the theorist Dyers ideas of star image paradoxes, as in this picture Katy Perry is both present, thorough the way she is staring directly at us, and absent, through the way that it is simply a picture and she is not stood talking to us. The font she has used for this advert is very modern, all the writing is sans-serif. The font used for her name is similar to neon lights used in stereotypical 1950's diners, this makes it stand out as its interesting and quite unusual. The poster also includes a tagline about her recent singles featured on the album. In the bottom right corner there are website links, so that if you wanted to get more information on the upcoming album or Katy Perry in general, you can visit these websites to find out more. Her body language in the image is very open, her pose is considered sexy, and that is further emphasised in the costume she is wearing. Her costume is very revealing and is probably subject to Laura Mulrey's theory of the 'male gaze', in which women are oppressed in the music and film industry, and objectified in sexualised costumes.

Analysis of Magazine Ad - Kings of Leon, Only by the Night

The font used throughout the poster, is sans-serif and is very modern looking. The underscores make the writing seem new age and very much like computer codes, giving it a modern tech feel. The image is quite striking, it is split into four, each quarter representing a member of the band. They have then placed a bird, possibly an owl or possibly an eagle, this could symbolise strength or mystery. Another interesting thing about the images is that they have markings on them, possibly like security footage, which could connotate danger. The image is a dull green colour making them stand out against the black background. The font used is big and bold, it is eye catching and puts across the message well. The fact 'OUT NOW' is in red could again symbolise danger, almost a listen if you dare message. The poster has a line of text discussing the singles they have released, sex on fire being one of their most successful songs. This will bring attention to the album as if people were a fan of that song because they had heard it on the radio they may want to buy their album. The Advert has a website in the bottom left corner of the poster, this will allow people to visit the website and buy the album. In the bottom right of the poster there is information on the record label so you can visit their website and find out more about Kings of Leon.

Prelim Photography Task

Our theme for this Preliminary photography task was positive vs negative, and while we had the freedom of taking what ever photos we liked we were still restricted on what what we could actually photograph, we decided we wanted to go for a nature theme.

This image was taken with the ISO on 800.
This image was just taken normally on the Manual setting.
This image was taken with the exposure level indicator turned up to 3.

As you can see these three pictures are very different. The first picture take in ISO 800 setting is brighter and a vibrant than the second picture that was taken on a normal setting. While the third picture is almost washed our as the highlights of the picture have been brought out intensely and made the tree much lighter. This Series of photographs was for the positive side of our task, as the trees around us are extremely important.

This image was taken on the manual setting with ISO on 400.

This image was taken on the landscape setting.

This image was taken in the portrait setting.

These images are not as obviously different as the last set, but these focus on the negative side of nature, the death of all living things. The first image is a food example of negative space, it has a focused view on the leaf but the grass is slightly blured out. On the image with the landscape setting, the whole image is in focus without a single focus point, which causes the leaf to not be in such high definiton as it is focusing on everything. The last image can also be used as an example of negative space but its not as good at showing it compared to the first image.

This image was taken in manual setting with the ISO at 400.

This image has the exposure level indicator up to 3.

This Image was taken with the portrait setting.

These images are for the positive side of our theme, we picked flowers as they are a often seen as positve, as people love to give flowers to people. The first image has the ISO turned up alot to 400, this has caused the image appear brighter when compared to the last image taken on the portrait setting. The second Image has been taken with over exposure this has made everything much brighter and has caused the flowers to hardly even be seen as they have turned almost white.

This set of images shows two extremes, overexposure and underexposure. The first image shows a image that is too bright, you can hardly see the rubbish in the picture. The second image is just the normal photo taken on the manual setting. The third photo is darked by a lack of exposure, this creates a nice effect like it could be nighttime but the focus of the image, the rubish, is still very visable. This set of photos was for the negative side of out theme as it explores the human impact on nature, litter.

This task has allowed me to learn about different settings on the camera, ones that will definetly come in handy when I'm taking photos for my ancillary texts. It has helped me in how to take artistic shots, and will definitely allow me to explore my options when it comes to photographing.
